416 RAC Land Rover with original box
This is a superb example of one of several variations of the RAC Land Rover issued. This model first appeared in 1959 and was replaced in 1962 by the Series II Land Rover with suspension and interior. The Series I editions can be found with a headboard and then without a headboard. Each edition is also available with smooth wheels or shaped wheels. This particular example will have been one of the last issued although, interestingly, it comes with a plain box without illustration and stamped 416 and model description on the end panel.
These boxes are quite rare and sought after, as are examples in nice condition like this Land rover which also has a lovely original metal canopy with the correct full text transfers. the editions with a headboard had a different canopy featuring just the RAC logo. Please note that I have now updated the photos with a correct, genuine original canopy. Previously I had mistakenly shown one with a replacement transfer set which use the wrong font style and spacing!
As can be seen in the photos, this model is in excellent condition apart from wear to paintwork on one side and it has had a replacement aerial. The hook, often broken or bent on these models, is untouched. the windows are clean and unmarked and the wheels are like new. The base is also unmarked and in nice and shiny metal.
The box is missing two end flaps but is solid and clean. There are some signs of wear and where tape has been applied in the long distant past as well as Land Rover in writing on one panel. Any box for this model, though, is a scarce item and this is a particularly interesting one to have.
